Anthropology: Concentration in Ethnic Studies [ANT_ETHS]


Students with a concentration in ethnic studies take courses that focus on cultural and power differences and similarities among groups in global contexts. Students undertake comprehensive analyses of ethnic identity, prejudice and discrimination, and social problems related to poverty and inequality. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational material in the sub-disciplines of Anthropology, including action anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. 
  2. Describe the methodologies used to conduct anthropological fieldwork in at least one sub-discipline. 
  3. Compare the major theoretical frameworks within anthropology using an historical perspective. 
  4. Develop a research question and/or hypothesis relevant to anthropological research. 
  5. Communicate anthropological knowledge clearly and effectively in writing. 
  6. Analyze cultural similarities and differences among human groups in a global context.
  7. Critically evaluate power structures that create and maintain social inequalities.

Program Standard Grade Point Average

The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.
