Adolescence Education: French (7-12) [AFR]


Students develop language skills and cultural awareness and acquire the pedagogical background necessary to teach French in grades 7-12 in New York state. Admission to the program prerequisite: An overall grade point average of 2.5.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to: 

  1. Comprehend and produce written and spoken French at a level commensurate with the advanced low level or higher as described in the current ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
  2. Analyze, interpret, and compare literary, artistic, and cultural texts in French within different francophone cultures.
  3. Use knowledge of linguistics and second language acquisition theory and research to plan and deliver instruction, as well as design and use ongoing performance assessment.
  4. Use knowledge of adolescent development to create a supportive learning environment for all students.

The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.

A. Required French Courses


Thirty credit hours of FRE courses at 300 level or above. At least 15 credit hours must be from the following group of FRE courses focusing on literature and culture:
Note: At least six credit hours must be at the 400 level or above.

B. Required Linguistics Course: 3 credit hours


C. Professional Education Courses: 36-37 credit hours


D. Eligibility for Student Teaching


  • A 2.5 grade point average overall
  • A 2.5 grade point average in required professional education course work
  • A 2.7 grade point average in major course work
  • 24 credit hours of FRE courses
  • A score of Advanced Low or better on the Oral Proficiency Interview
  • A grade of B or better in AED 437 and 438 Methods block

Grade point averages are figured with all major and/or professional courses taken to date, even if not required prior to student teaching.

Complete the following workshops prior to student teaching:

  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
  • Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)

Additional Certification Option


Students who wish to independently pursue additional certification in areas such as TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), other languages, or FLES (Foreign Language for the Elementary School) should discuss these options with their advisors. Students should consult New York state certification requirements and meet with their program coordinator for more information.
