Art: Concentration in Studio Art [ART_ARTS]

The B.A. in studio art is a well-rounded degree program with a strong basis in liberal arts. It is intended for students who plan to pursue a generalized career in art or to prepare for graduate study. The degree requires 49 credit hours in the major, including foundation, skills core, studio specialization and four art history courses. Specializations include ceramics, fibers, painting, print media and sculpture. The B.A. program does not require a portfolio review for admission. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Utilize the elements of art and principles of design.
- Execute visual and written/verbal skills applicable to the presentation of their work.
- Understand the ways in which art, media, and culture affect each other and society-at-large.
- Analyze critically works of art from traditional to nontraditional mediums, diverse genres, and a wide range of historical periods and geographical locations, demonstrating comprehension of global perspectives in visual culture.
- Evaluate works of art/design using a personalized visual vocabulary that expresses knowledge, awareness and dialog with historical and contemporary influences within arts, humanities, sciences and technology.
Program Standard Grade Point Average Requirement
The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.

Major in Art with a concentration in Studio Art
A. Required Courses Core in Art Studio: 15 credit hours
B. Exposure and Skills Core in Art Studio: 15 credit hours
C. Studio Art Specialization Courses: 6 credit hours
Specialization: select a sequence in one of the following areas - Ceramics: ATS 204 and 304; Fibers: ATS 208 and 308; Painting: ATS 203 and 303; Print Media: ATS 207 and 307, or ATS 209 and 309; Sculpture: ATS 206 and 306. E. Art History Foundation and Advanced Courses: 12 credit hours
Additional courses
Select six credit hours of related electives chosen in consultation with advisor; including one ATH course at the 300-level or above, which must be writing intensive. F. Free Electives: 29-42 total credit hours
