Chemistry leading to the 3 + 2 Engineering Program [CEN]

This program in the Chemistry Department  leads to the award of the bachelor of science in chemistry from SUNY Cortland and the bachelor of science in engineering from a cooperating institution.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational material in the traditional sub disciplines of Chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry.  Integrate knowledge across the sub disciplines of Chemistry
  2. Retrieve, analyze, and interpret peer-reviewed literature in the field of Chemistry
  3. Communicate science effectively through written reports, oral presentations and discussion
  4. Design and carry out experiments that answer scientific questions in the field of Chemistry

Requirements for the chemistry major under the program include:


A. Study within the Major Area


Up to nine additional credit hours of engineering and chemistry courses taken at the cooperating engineering institution in the fourth and fifth years may be used toward meeting American Chemical Society certification requirements.

38 credit hours in chemistry including:

Fifteen credit hours in mathematics including:


Eight credit hours in physics, including:


C. Additional Courses


Six credit hours of English composition; 21 credit hours in General Education.

D. Courses at the cooperating engineering institution


For the additional degree in engineering, students will take courses at the cooperating engineering institution. A maximum 30 credit hours of courses approved by the cooperating institution will be transferred to Cortland to complete the 124 credit hours required to earn the degree.
