Adolescence Education: English (7-12) [AEN]

The major in the English Department  leads to New York state certification to teach English in grades 7-12. The bachelor of arts requires proficiency in a foreign language.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of English language arts subject matter content that includes literature and multimedia texts as well as knowledge of the nature of adolescents as readers.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of English language arts subject matter content that specifically includes language and writing as well as knowledge of adolescents as language users.
  3. Plan instruction and design assessments for reading and the study of literature to promote learning for all students.
  4. Plan instruction and design assessments for composing texts (i.e. oral, written, and visual) to promote learning for all students.
  5. Plan, implement, assess, and reflect on research-based instruction that increases motivation and active student engagement, builds sustained learning of English language arts, and responds to diverse students' context-based needs.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of how theories and research about social justice, diversity, equity, student identities, and schools as institutions can enhance students' opportunities to learn in English Language Arts.
  7. Candidates are prepared to interact knowledgably with students, families, and colleagues based on social needs and institutional roles, engage in leadership and/or collaborative roles in English Language Arts professional learning communities, and actively develop as professional educators.
  8. Candidates will develop the ability to read young adult literature for its emotional content and produce reading strategies that assist their future students in discerning and responding to the affective dimension of a text.

Program Standard Grade Point Average Requirement

The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.

C. AEN Coding Policy


Students will be coded as AENW until they have achieved an institutional 2.75 overall grade point average or better and have completed all of the following course work:

  • ENG 290
  • Three out of the four survey courses (ENG 325, 326, 355, 356)
  • All but one or two GE courses
  • The foreign language requirement
  • PSY 101 and PSY 232
  • HLH 110 or 199

When eligible, students need to apply to the director of adolescence education: English (7-12) for candidacy.

Because the AEN code is required before students will be admitted into the junior year courses with attached fieldwork, transfer students coming in with junior status will begin AED courses in the fall semester of their senior year and must student teach in the fall semester thereafter for a December degree.

D. 100 Hours Early/Pre-Student Teaching Fieldwork Policy


Candidates must have achieved a 2.75 or better overall grade point average by the end of the semester prior to the junior year. Students failing to meet this standard are ineligible to take junior-year courses with attached early fieldwork. Students who fall below a 2.75 grade point average while registered for any AED courses will automatically be de-registered from those courses. In such a case, the registrar will maintain the student at his or her original level of registered credits, but the student is responsible with the help of an advisor to re-register for appropriate substitute courses before the close of that semester's billing cycle.

Candidates acquire 100 hours of early fieldwork in conjunction with each of the following courses:

E. Student Teaching Policy


To be eligible for the professional semester, which is offered for undergraduates only in the fall (unless granted departmental approval), students must complete the following requirements:

  • 21 hours of English, including ENG 290, three of the four survey courses (325, 326, 355, 356), 374 and 433.
  • PSY 101; PSY 232; HLH 110, 199, or 510; AED 308, 408, 341, 415, 441 and the three workshops listed in section B.

Required grade point average: Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 in all courses to be able to student teach during fall of senior year. Students must meet all requirements for eligibility to student teach by the end of the semester prior to the semester they are scheduled to student teach. Additional work in summer school or independent study cannot be used to remedy deficiencies. Students with incompletes at the end of the semester prior to student teaching will be ineligible to student teach. If they meet all requirements at the end of the next semester, they can reapply for eligibility and be put on a waiting list to student teach.

F. Departmental Policy on Retaking Required Courses


Students may retake no more than two required courses. They may retake these courses only once.
