Students develop the content area knowledge and the pedagogical background necessary to teach English as a Second Language in grades K-12 in New York state. For additional information, visit the Modern Languages Department .
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Use knowledge of language as a system to analyze samples of learner language.
- Apply theories and research on second language acquisition and on the nature and role of culture to plan and deliver ESL instruction.
- Use research-based practices, strategies, and techniques to plan effective standards-based ESL and content instruction.
- Select, adapt, and use a wide range of developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive materials to plan and deliver differentiated ESL and content instruction, as well as design and use a variety of performance-based classroom assessment tools and techniques to measure student learning and to inform instruction.
Career Potential
- Public school ENL (English as a New Language) teacher
- ENL instructor in the private sector or overseas
Prerequisite for Admission to the Major
- Overall grade point average of 2.5

- Liberal Arts Requirements: 90 credit hours

A. Required ESL Content Core: 36 credit hours
B. Professional Education
Seventeen to 18 credit hours plus 12 credit hours student teaching and SED-mandated workshops.
C. Requirements for Student Teaching
- 2.5 grade point average overall
- 2.5 grade point average in required professional course work
- 2.7 grade point average in major course work
- completion of all content core course work
- grade of B or better in Methods block (AED 437 and 438)

- Grade point averages are figured with all major and/or professional course taken to date, even if not required prior to student teaching.
Required Workshops
Complete the following workshops prior to student teaching:
- Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
- Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
- Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)
