Speech and Hearing Science [SHS]

This major in the Communication Disorders and Sciences Department  prepares students for graduate study in speech-language pathology, audiology, education, teacher of the deaf, or special education.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Attain and retain theoretical knowledge of normal processes related to the development of speech, language, hearing and communication as demonstrated by key assessments defined in specific course syllabi in the Speech and Language Disabilities curriculum.
  2. Attain and retain theoretical knowledge of disorders of speech, language, hearing and communication as demonstrated by key assessments defined in specific course syllabi in the Speech and Language Disabilities curriculum.
  3. Learn, describe and demonstrate clinical assessment and intervention techniques and strategies utilizing evidence based practice as demonstrated by key assessments defined in specific course syllabi in the Speech and Language Disabilities curriculum.
  4. Develop and refine oral, written and professional communication skills as demonstrated by key assessments defined in specific course syllabi in the Speech and Language Disabilities curriculum.
  5. Identify diversity and the global society and explain how this knowledge will guide their interactions with clients and their families as demonstrated by key assessments defined in specific course syllabi in the Speech and Language Disabilities curriculum.

Career Potential

  • Graduate school
  • With a master's degree in speech-language pathology or an Au.D. in audiology, you can work in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, universities, private practice, and industry. Most states also require a license and national certification.

C. Foreign Language Requirement


Students are expected to demonstrate successful completion of two semesters (through the 102 level) of a college-level foreign language or confirm proficiency equivalent to successful completion of the second semester (102) of a college-level foreign language sequence through a testing program approved by the Modern Languages Department.
