Physics: Concentration in Geophysics [PHY_GEOP]

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: School of Arts and Sciences

The study of geophysics includes a knowledge of the physical laws that govern the earth and a range of geology topics such as the earth's interior, crustal movements, mineral and fossil fuel resources. Crucial to these topics are the mathematical tools needed to describe them. For more information, contact the Physics Department .

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Understand, recall and apply the core principles, concepts, theories, and laws of physics such as: Classical Mechanics, electromagnetic theory, thermodynamics, optics, circuits and electronics, introductory quantum mechanics, and the special theory of relativity.
  2. Understand, recall and apply basic mathematical theorems, strategies, concepts and applications commonly used in physics such as: Calculus, vector analysis and vector calculus, differential equations, complex analysis and matrices.
  3. Collect, evaluate, and interpret experimental data, including having a familiarity with the electronic and other equipment commonly used in laboratory settings.
  4. Present scientific information using accepted writing techniques.
