Physical Education [PEM]

This major in the Physical Education Department  prepares students to become physical education teachers in grades K-12. Concentrations in adapted physical education and outdoor adventure education are available to interested students.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Education in Physical Education and satisfactory performance on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations, students may apply for initial New York state teaching certification in the field of physical education.

A. General Education and Liberal Arts


General Education Courses (21 cr. hr.)
Liberal Arts Electives (14 cr. hr.)

  • Students can meet GE 7 and Writing Intensive (WI) requirement with ENG 203, 260 or 261.
  • Students can meet GE 11 requirement with EXS 290, which also meets EXS option.

B. Professional Block: 31 credit hours (2.5 grade point average required)


To be accepted into the B.S.Ed. program, students must process a teacher education application and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.

C. Professional Education: 10-11 credit hours

E. Physical Education Activities: 12 credit hours required


15 credit-hour maximum

In addition to the 11 courses listed below, students must complete one credit hour of activity elective(s).

Other Requirements


Note: Specific information regarding requirements (state examinations, identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment, alcohol and drug abuse education, school antiviolence education and foreign language requirements) for New York State teaching certification can be found under Degree Requirements .

Required Workshops


Complete the following workshops prior to student teaching:

  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
  • Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)
