History [HIS]


In addition to the required 100-level history courses in Western Civilization and/or World History and the 200-level American history survey courses, all students must take HIS 280: Introduction to Public History, HIS 290: Historical Methods, HIS 490: Seminar (a research seminar), at least three credit hours of experiential learning (for adolescence education students, student teaching will count toward experiential learning) and at least 18 credit hours of 300-level or above history classes with a minimum of three credit hours in each of the four categories — United States, Europe, Africa/Asia/Latin America/Middle East, Global/Transnational (and an additional six credit hours distributed across two of the four categories).

Note: The bachelor of arts degree requires intermediate level (202) proficiency in a foreign language.

Major Requirements: 42 credit hours


A. Introductory Courses: 12 credit hours


100-level history courses in Western Civilization and/or World History and the 200-level American history survey courses are required.

B. Research and Methods: 9 credit hours


C. Upper-Division Courses: 18 credit hours


Eighteen credit hours of 300-level or above history classes with a minimum of three credit hours in each of the four categories:

  1. Europe
  2. Africa/Asia/Latin America/Middle East
  3. United States,
  4. Global/Transnational

and an additional six credit hours distributed across two of the four categories.

3. United States, 300 level or above: 3-6 credit hours


Take at least three credit hours.

D. Experiential Learning: 3 credit hours


Hands-on historical experience and an introduction to the work of professional historians in public history, teaching or research.

Foreign Language Requirement: 12 credit hours


Foreign language through the 202 level.

General Education Courses: 30 credit hours


Upper-Division Electives: 21 credit hours


Choose 21 credit hours in HIS or general electives at the 300 level or above. Those electives could include study abroad or build toward a minor or a second major in another department.

General Electives: 18 credit hours


Choose elective courses from the 100-500 levels.
