Teaching English as a Second Language (K-12) Certification [ESL_CERT]


Students develop the content area knowledge and the pedagogical background necessary to teach English as a Second Language in grades K-12 in New York state. For additional information, visit the Modern Languages Department .

Prerequisites for Admission to the Major

  • Overall grade point average of 2.5

Requirements

  2. Liberal Arts Requirements: 90 credit hours

B. Professional Education


Seventeen to 18 credit hours plus 12 credit hours student teaching and SED-mandated workshops.

C. Requirements for Student Teaching


  • 2.5 grade point average overall
  • 2.5 grade point average in required professional course work
  • 2.7 grade point average in major course work
  • completion of all content core course work
  • grade of B or better in SL Methods block (AED 437 and 438)
  • grade of B or better in   
  • Passing score on the Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST)
  • Grade point averages are figured with all major and/or professional course taken to date, even if not required prior to student teaching.

Required Workshops


Complete the following workshops prior to student teaching:

  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
  • Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)

Total Credit Hours Required for Graduation: 120
