Students develop the content area knowledge and the pedagogical background necessary to teach English as a Second Language in grades K-12 in New York state. For additional information, visit the Modern Languages Department .

Prerequisites for Admission to the Major
- Overall grade point average of 2.5
- Passing grade on the Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST)

- Liberal Arts Requirements: 90 credit hours

A. Required ESL Content Core: 33 credit hours
B. Professional Education
Seventeen to 18 credit hours plus 14 credit hours student teaching and SED-mandated workshops. C. Requirements for Sudent Teaching
- 2.5 grade point average overall
- 2.5 grade point average in required professional course work
- 2.7 grade point average in major course work
- completion of all content core course work
- grade of B or better in SL Methods block (AED 437 and 438)

- Grade point averages are figured with all major and/or professional course taken to date, even if not required prior to student teaching.
Required Workshops
Complete the following workshops prior to student teaching:
- Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
- Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
- Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)
