This major in the Physical Education Department prepares students to become physical education teachers in grades K-12. Concentrations in adapted physical education and outdoor adventure education are available to interested students.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Education in Physical Education and satisfactory performance on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations, students may apply for initial New York state teaching certification in the field of physical education.

A. General Education and Liberal Arts: Minimum of 60 credit hours

Liberal Arts Electives (14 cr. hr.)

Students can meet GE 7 and Writing Intensive (WI) requirement with ENG 203, 260 or 261.
Students can meet GE 11 requirement with EXS 290, which also meets EXS option.

BIO 301 - Human Anatomy and Physiology I (3 cr. hr.)
BIO 302 - Human Anatomy and Physiology II (3 cr. hr.)
CPN 100 - Writing Studies I (3 cr. hr.) or
CPN 102 - Writing Studies in the Community I (4 cr. hr.)
CPN 101 - Writing Studies II (3 cr. hr.) or
CPN 103 - Writing Studies in the Community II (4 cr. hr.)
PSY 101 - Introductory Psychology (3 cr. hr.)
PSY 101 also meets GE 3 requirement.
PSY 332 - Educational Psychology (3 cr. hr.)

B. Professional Block: 28 credit hours (2.5 grade point average required)

To be accepted into the B.S.Ed. program, students must process a teacher education application and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.

PED 356 - Adapted Physical Education and Sport (3 cr. hr.)
EDU 454 - Pre-Student Teaching Conference in Physical Education (.5 cr. hr.)
EDU 455 - Student Teaching Seminar in Physical Education (.5 cr. hr.)
EDU 456 - Student Teaching in Physical Education (14 cr. hr.)

C. Professional Education: 10-11 credit hours

HLH 110 - Personal and Community Health (3 cr. hr.)
HLH 120 - Responding to Emergencies (2 cr. hr.)
HLH 120 can be waived with proof of current CPR/AED First Aid certification.

EXS 230 - Foundations of Coaching: Principles and Theories (3 cr. hr.) or
PED 400-level coaching clinic (2 cr. hr.)

Students select from various individual and/or team sport coaching clinics: PED 404-418.

D. Physical Education Theory: 25 credit hours
