Early Childhood Education (Birth-2) [EDE]

This major in the Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department  prepares students to become early childhood educators in preschool settings through grade two. Students learn to create high-quality environments that respect children and their families, are developmentally appropriate, and are child centered.

C. Approved Childhood and Early Childhood Concentrations


30-31 credit hours with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 and 400 level.

Approved concentration requirements are listed in the Childhood and Early Childhood program requirements. If a second major is selected as an alternative to the 30-credit hour concentration, the requirements will be listed in the academic department of the second major.

I. Environmental Studies Concentration [EST]


31 credit hours, with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 level or above

A. Required Environmental Studies Core: 13 credit hours


B. Natural Science Courses - select six credit hours at the 300 level and above from the following:

C. Social Science Courses - select six credit hours at the 300 level and above from the following:


D. Electives: six credit hours


Select six additional credit hours at the 300 level and above from those courses not taken to fulfill the Natural Sciences (B) or the Social Sciences (C) as listed above.

II. Humanities Concentration [HUM]


30 credit hours, with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 level or above.

A. Required Humanities Core: 12 credit hours

Select three additional credit hours from GE Category 7 - Humanities


Select three additional credit hours from GE Category 8 - The Arts


B. Humanities Electives at the 300 and 400 level : 18 credit hours


  • Select 18 credit hours at the 300 or 400 level in any of the following disciplines with the subject prefix:
    ATH, ATS, ATT, ENG, MUS, PHI, PWR, THT.
  • Additionally, EDU 303 and COM 436 may be used to fulfill this requirement.

III. Social Sciences Concentration [SOS]


30 credit hours, with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 level or above.

A. Required Social Sciences Core: 12 credit hours


Select three credit hours from GE Category 4 - U.S. History and Society


Select three credit hours from GE Category 5 - Western Civilization


Select three credit hours from GE Category 6 - Contrasting Cultures


B. Social Sciences Electives at the 300 and 400 level : 18 credit hours


  • Select 18 credit hours at the 300 or 400 level in any of the following disciplines with the subject prefix:
    ANT, ECO, GRY, HIS, POL, SOC.
