Adolescence Education: French (7-12) [AFR]

Students develop language skills and cultural awareness and acquire the pedagogical background necessary to teach French in grades 7-12 in New York state. There is an admission to the program prerequisite of an overall grade point average of 2.5.

Career Potential

  • French in the elementary school
    (Note: French adolescence education majors are eligible for French K-6 extension by taking ICC 324 Foreign Language for the Elementary School)
  • Middle school teacher
  • High school teacher

A. Required French Courses


Thirty credit hours of FRE courses at 300 level or above. At least 15 credit hours must be from the following group of FRE courses focusing on literature and culture:
Note: At least six credit hours must be at the 400 level or above.

B. Required Linguistics Course: 3 credit hours


C. Professional Education Courses: 41-42 credit hours


D. Eligibility for Student Teaching


  • A 2.5 grade point average overall
  • A 2.5 grade point average in required professional education course work
  • A 2.7 grade point average in major course work
  • 24 credit hours of FRE courses
  • A score of Intermediate High or better on the Oral Proficiency Interview
  • A grade of B or better in AED 437 and 438 Methods block

Grade point averages are figured with all major and/or professional courses taken to date, even if not required prior to student teaching.

Required Workshops


Complete the following workshops prior to student teaching:

  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
  • Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)

Additional Certification in TESOL Option


For students who wish to independently pursue additional certification in TESOL, the following substitutions may be allowed.

Students should consult New York state certification requirements and with their program coordinator for more information.
