Challenge your competitive spirit and love of sport to succeed in the fast-paced and complex world of business by choosing to study for the M.S. in sport management at SUNY Cortland.

Program Highlights

Select from several options to pursue this 30-credit-hour degree, including full-time study on campus or a part-time alternative that combines traditional classroom activities with courses delivered online. Both options include extensive fieldwork that provides actual sport management industry experience in specialties such as collegiate sport, professional sport (major and minor league), national sport committees, North American sport governing bodies, full-service sport marketing agencies and event management firms.

Career Potential

When you successfully complete the program, you’re well prepared for a career with national sport organizations, multinational corporations and businesses in areas such as sport marketing, media and communications, event and facility management, sport law and labor relations, security and risk management, information technology in sport enterprises, sport economics and finance, sport production and supply chain management, or sport governance and leadership.

Admission Requirements

  1. A minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.8 is preferred. If you have an undergraduate grade point average below 2.8 your application will be reviewed for admission on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration standardized test scores, your personal statement and letters of recommendation.
  2. Completion and submission of Cortland’s Graduate Application with the appropriate application fee.
  3. Official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended to be forwarded directly to SUNY Cortland Graduate Admissions Office.
  4. Either the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores to be sent to SUNY Cortland by Educational Testing Service (ETS).
  5. A personal statement containing your professional and educational goals in 250 words or less.
  6. A minimum of two letters of recommendation.

Program Requirements


The Master of Science in Sport Management is delivered in two distinctive tracks. The full-time residential program is a 30 credit-hour program, requiring a core of six specific courses, two elective courses and a six-credit-hour culminating experience offered on campus in the Sport Management Department. The part-time online program with residency is delivered as a hybrid program with a combination of traditional and online courses to be completed in approximately two calendar years. Two weekend residencies are required to complete the program.
