PED 526 - Physical Activity and Fitness Programming for Schools

Designed for teacher candidates to expand their knowledge base on how to create and implement developmentally appropriate fitness-oriented curricula and physical activity programming for school-aged children. Prerequisites: PED 603 and PED 655; Prerequisite/Corequisite: PED 665. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Describe the effects of the lack of physical activity on health, its causes, and the national recommendations for increasing physical activity and the development of fitness in children, youth, and adults. 
2. Identify and apply the processes involved in developing and maintaining an effective physical activity program in K-12 schools. 
3. Develop pedagogically sound, developmentally appropriate fitness programming for diverse school populations incorporating behavior modification strategies to facilitate adherence to physical activity. 
4. Identify and apply a variety of appropriate fitness curriculum and web-based/technology resources that relate to the health-related fitness of K-12 children. 
5. Create a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Plan (CSPAP) proposal targeting the advocacy for quality physical education and increasing the physical activity levels for school aged children.
