ATR 516 - Acute Care and Emergency Management

Pathology and immediate pre-hospital management of specific acute illnesses and traumatic injuries that may be encountered by the athletic trainer. Attention is given to the clinical signs and symptoms of orthopedic-related injuries and clinical manifestations of acute trauma of the body's systems. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Create and design policies that pertain to emergency preparedness.
  2. Critically appraise patient(s) with acute conditions including triaging those that are life threatening or otherwise emergent.
  3. Develop and implement a management plan for a person with a brain injury.
  4. Monitor and evaluate environmental conditions to make appropriate recommendations to start or stop activity in order to prevent environmental illness or injury.
  5. Integrate restrictive, assistive, and prophylactic devices into the plan of care.
  6. Appraise and utilize evidence-based practice guidelines and trends.
  7. Interpret and implement practice patterns that adhere to standards and best practices.
