AAS 323 - History of African Development

Examines the history, ideologies and practice of development in Africa, south of the Sahara. Study and analyze specific development projects/ plans taking into consideration their history, politics and the role that institutions play. Explore economic development goals of structural change and social welfare, as well as outcomes of development projects and look at the evolution of development practices and how these shape the societies. Prerequisite: HIS 100 or 101 or 110 or 111 Also listed as HIS 323 (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the historical significance of key themes, events and people relevant to Africa's development history.
  2. Interpret primary source evidence to make claims about the past. 
  3. Assess the persuasiveness of historians' claims about the past. 
  4. Establish a primary source's historical context through sourcing techniques (including, for example, by identifying its author, date and place of production, form and intended audience).
