BIO 306 - Human Genetics

Introduction to inheritance of similarities and differences in humans. Emphasis on genetic causes of diseases and defects. Not open to biology majors. Lecture/Lab Hours: Three lectures. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain how traits are transmitted from parents to offspring using pedigree analysis.
  2. Describe both the replication and expression of DNA.
  3. Explain the role of both single gene and chromosome mutations in altering the phenotype including the involvement of these mutations in the development of disease.
  4. Explain current techniques used in clinical human genetics including those for assisted reproduction, gene therapy, and genetic testing especially as they relate to human health.
