AAS 211 - Rock and Roll: African Americans and the World

An African American centric history of Rock and Roll music from the early 1950s to the present, and its effects on culture, society, and racial relations worldwide. Fulfills: GE 8, GEAR; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize the contributions of African American culture to the development of Rock and Roll and subsequent musical derivations.
  2. Identify the previous musical developments that helped form this unique American art form.
  3. Analyze and evaluate the political, social, and cultural conditions that led to the formation of Rock and Roll.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of how power, bias, prejudice, and discrimination can affect society's values, attitudes and institutions.
  5. Examine approaches that address barriers and foster greater equity and inclusivity.
