SPA 375 - Immigrants, Adventurers and Captives: Testimonies of Displacement in Spanish Literature

Study of cultural displacement in Spanish texts. Examination of narratives, drama, poetry, and films focusing on immigration, adventure, and captivity, with attention to cultural otherness and self-realization. Prerequisite: SPA 306 or 307 or 308. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Express ideas in Spanish with clarity and precision, including the accurate use of literary and cultural concepts encountered in Spanish literature.
  2. Debate in a productive and collegial manner in Spanish.
  3. Analyze a literary text through discussion, short answers, and essays.
  4. Differentiate between the social, political, and psychological dimensions of displacement.
  5. Compare the ways in which writers, filmmakers, and artists have presented the experience of displacement in different media and genres throughout Spanish history.
