SPA 421 - Spanish Literature of the Medieval Period

Middle Ages prose, lyric and narrative poetry, according to subtitle. May be repeated as subtitle changes. Prerequisites: Two of the following courses: SPA 306, SPA 307, SPA 308. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Theorize on the development of written literature from the oral tradition in Medieval Spain.
  2. Analyze representative narrations, poems, dramatic pieces, and essays from the Spanish Medieval period.
  3. Assess the effect of historical developments in Europe on thought and ideology in Spanish literary texts of the period.
  4. Distinguish the contributions of Judaic, Islamic, and Christian cultures on the development of Medieval literature in Spain.
  5. Formulate stylistic profiles of canonical writers of the period.
