SPA 417 - Spanish Literature of the Nineteenth Century

Nineteenth century: Romanticism; Realism; Naturalism. Subtitles indicate period to be studied. May be repeated as subtitle changes. Prerequisites: Two of the following courses: SPA 306, SPA 307, SPA 308. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze representative narrations, poems, dramatic pieces, and essays from 19th Century Spain.
  2. Distinguish the various literary movements present in 19th Century Spanish literature.
  3. Assess the effect of historical developments in Europe on thought and ideology in Spanish literary texts of the period.
  4. Categorize the diverse aesthetic movements in Spain and Europe that permeate literary texts of the period.
  5. Formulate stylistic profiles of canonical writers of the period.
