SPA 330 - Música Contemporánea de España e Hispanoamérica

Overview of contemporary Hispanic society through study of various genres of popular music including: cantautor, flamenco, new wave, salsa, bolero, cumbia.  Prerequisite: One of the following: SPA 306, 307 or 308. Fulfills: GE 8, GEAR; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify representative genres of Spanish and Latin American music.
  2. Distinguish between genres based on instrumentation and rhythms.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of overarching concepts such as hybridization and mestizaje in music.
  4. Analyze lyric content of representative artists in the nueva canción tradition.
  5. Compose a detailed and coherent analysis of the cultural function of music in the Americas.
