ECO 383 - Labor Economics

Introduction to contemporary issues in labor relations. Topics include: modern dynamics of capitalist labor process, economic and social consequences of mechanization, wages determination, role of trade unions. Prerequisites: ECO 105 and ECO 110 or 111. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Delineate strengths and limitations of neo-classical and Marxist theories in explaining labor processes.
  2. Utilize economic history, theories and empirical studies on labor issues to discuss current debates.
  3. Analyze the effects of labor-management relations for work conditions, unemployment and collective bargaining power.
  4. Discuss the implications of labor-management relations for race, class and gender, and the relevance of social movements on these issues.
