COM 230 - Statistical Methods

Basic concepts of probability, descriptive and inferential statistics including central tendency, variability, correlation, regression, parametric tests. Mathematics majors may take course only as a free elective. Also listed as MAT/PSY 201, ECO 221. Fulfills: GE 1, GEMA; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret and draw inferences from mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables and schematics in communication problems.
  2. Represent mathematical information symbolically, visually, numerically and verbally in communication problems.
  3. Employ statistical methods to solve problems in communication.
  4. Estimate and check mathematical results for reasonableness in communication.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the limits of mathematical and statistical methods in communication.
