FSA 530 - Supporting the Communication of Students with Complex Needs Overview of typical and atypical language development and evidence-based practice for supporting the needs of children with complex language and communication impairments. (1 cr. hr.) Frequency code B = offered at least once per year
Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Articulate an understanding of typical and atypical language development in order to address the needs of individuals with complex language and communication needs.
- Describe communication tools and technologies utilized to support individuals, and legal requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Apply the seven principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to plan and assess an academic lesson for a focal student who uses text-to speech software.
- Create an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system, which promotes academic and social inclusion in an age/grade appropriate general education classroom.
