ANT 213 - Archaeology of Death A biocultural examination of death, dying, and mortuary rituals. Applies a cross-cultural perspective to ethnographic and archaeological data to explore the various ways the dead are commemorated and what mortuary rituals can tell us about living communities past and present. Prerequisite: ANT 102 or ANT 103. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.) Frequency code C = offered at least once every two years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe Western biomedical approaches to death and dying.
- Evaluate Western mortuary rituals within a comparative cross-cultural framework.
- Evaluate bioarchaeological and mortuary data to understand death and dying within different cultural contexts.
- Describe ethical issues related to the study of the dead.
