POL 412 - Qualitative Research in Political Science

Study of qualitative research methods used in political science. Human subjects protocols, in-depth interviewing, focus groups and text analysis, participant observation will be covered. Prerequisite: POL 112. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code C = offered at least once every two years

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain researchers' ethical responsibilities for human subjects.
  2. Code qualitative data using open coding, axial coding and selective coding techniques.
  3. Analyze qualitative data using content analysis, grounded theory and narrative analysis.
  4. Organize qualitative data and develop a research proposal that includes qualitative methodology.
