ATR 418 - Pharmacology and Advanced General Medical Conditions

Survey of clinical medical skills to provide the athletic training students with an opportunity to understand and identify epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis and signs and symptoms of common illness and disease to the body's systems. Examination of basic principles of pharmacology comprising the knowledge, skills and values that the entry-level certified athletic trainer should possess. Examination of the indications, contraindications, precautions and interactions of drugs and medications as well as the governing regulations relevant to treating and caring for the aforementioned common illness and disease to the body's systems. Open only to athletic training majors. Prerequisite: ATR 318. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Utilize relevant healthcare standards, statutes, and regulations for appropriate pharmacologic management.
  2. Apply appropriate pharmacological agents and administration methods in order to monitor the management of a patient's medical condition considering indications, contraindications, dosing, interactions, adverse reactions, and patient education utilizing evidence-based practice guidelines.
  3. Apply appropriate routes of medication administration based on patient- and drug-related factors as well as statutory regulations.
  4. Explain to patients/clients the effects and risks of use, misuse, and abuse of alcohol, prescription and recreational drugs, and performance-enhancing substances and ergogenic aids.
  5. Appraise and utilize evidence-based practice guidelines and trends.
  6. Interpret and implement practice patterns that adhere to standards and best practices.
  7. Apply comprehensive examination skills of the body's systems to reach a clinical diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan.
