REC 380 - Programming and Leadership

Introduction to programming and leadership theory. Principles and techniques at the small group, agency, and community level in a range of parks, recreation, and leisure services contexts will be explored with a focus on design and implementation of recreation programs for diverse groups. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify basic principles of recreation programming and leadership.
  2. Plan, develop, facilitate and evaluate recreation programs in a given leisure-related setting.
  3. Identify the effectiveness of various leadership styles in practice.
  4. Identify how ethics and values guide leaders in the recreation field.
  5. Correctly demonstrate the design and writing of measurable program objectives.
  6. Apply various programming and leadership tools and techniques, including strategic planning, program budgeting, scheduling, and promotion.
  7. Undertake an effective writing process, making informed decisions about their writing with input from their instructor.
  8. Write effectively in specific disciplinary genres.
