MAT 111 - Algebra for College Students

Manipulation of algebraic expressions, linear and quadratic equations and their applications, solutions to various equations and inequalities, graphs and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and their applications, and systems of equations. Prerequisite: Two units of Regents high school mathematics. Not open to students with credit for any higher-numbered mathematics course. Fulfills GE 1; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Define variables, write and solve equations derived from word problems.
2. Solve linear, quadratic, rational, absolute and radical equations and inequalities.
3. Connect the algebraic expression of a function with its graph.
4. Connect transformations with their effects on algebraic and graphical representations of functions.
5. Compute compositions and inverses of basic functions.
6. Solve exponential and logarithmic equations.
7. Solve linear systems in two unknowns.
