CAP 104 - Computers and Society

Investigate the societal, political, ethical, and financial consequences of the digital revolution. Examine the impact of technological advances on communication, personal lives, the workplace, careers, education, health and privacy. Topics include social media, robotics, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and Web 2.0 tools such as wikis, blogs and Google applications. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze the beneficial and detrimental ways in which computers affect individuals, organizations, and society.
  2. Demonstrate and effectively communicate how future technological advances will impact professional or personal lives.
  3. Apply research, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills in the creation of emerging technology solutions.
  4. Express how computer security issues, privacy concerns, governmental regulations, and sustainable processes impact society at large.
  5. Evaluate the role of teamwork skills and describe how these abilities influence the achievement of organizational goals.
  6. Compare ethical codes of practice for computer professionals and consider their societal implications.
