ATS 108 - Fibers I - Surface Design

Introduces basic techniques of creating surface design on textiles; sewing, dyeing, resists, embroidery, silk screen, etc., to create art cloth. Emphasis is placed on creative problem-solving. Technical exploration, supported by lectures, critiques and research of historical precedent and contemporary practice promote individual exploration of fiber as an expressive artistic medium. Fulfills: GE 8; LASR. Notes: The State University of New York College at Cortland reserves the right to select and retain indefinitely any student artwork done in connection with course work completed at the university.(3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze, critically, works of art from traditional to nontraditional mediums, diverse genres, and a range of historical periods and geographical locations, demonstrating comprehension of global perspectives in visual culture.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which art, media, and culture affect each other and society-at-large.
  3. Execute visual and written/verbal skills applicable to the presentation of their work.
  4. Utilize the elements of art and principles of design to create artworks.
