ATR 517 - General Medical Conditions in Athletic Training

A system-based approach investigating the pathophysiology, prevention, recognition and management of non-orthopedic illnesses, diseases and disorders in an active population using the most current evidence-based practices. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Implement a pre-participation examination process in order to determine participation status and identify potential risks or the necessity for participation restrictions.
  2. Apply comprehensive examination skills of the body's systems to reach a clinical diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan.
  3. Identify appropriate diagnostic tests for conditions and evaluate the results to aid in clinical decision-making.
  4. Integrate prevention strategies for at-risk individuals to allow for safe participation in physical activity.
  5. Appraise and utilize evidence-based practice guidelines and trends.
  6. Interpret and implement practice patterns that adhere to standards and best practices.
