PED 533 - Autism Spectrum Disorder and Physical Education

Designed to provide the student with readings, discussions and activities related to the recognition of behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in physical education. The emphasis of the course will be on identifying interventions that empower teachers to address the needs of students identified with the characteristics of ASD in physical education environments. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the unique characteristics and learning attributes of individuals who have been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorders.   
  2. Identify appropriate assessment strategies to determine developmentally appropriate instruction and learning outcomes for individuals identified with Autism Spectrum Disorders. 
  3. Identify secondary learning characteristics and comorbidity conditions such as sensory processing disorders, speech delays, and motoric delays for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. 
  4. Implement interdisciplinary instructional strategies that align with appropriate student learning outcomes leading to achievement on individualized educational outcomes. 
  5. Identify and demonstrate appropriate instructional strategies that support the inclusion of individuals identified with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
