ESL 522 - Theory and Practice of Bilingual/Multicultural Education

Provides a foundation in the historical, sociopolitical, linguistic and educational issues related to bilingual and multicultural education. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once every two years

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze the history and current state of bilingual education in the U.S. 
  2. Identify the characteristics, goals, and research on the effectiveness of various models and types of programs for English language learners.
  3. Analyze the relationship between linguistic and cultural diversity, and of the meaning and goals of multicultural education. 
  4. Select instructional strategies for building on students' home languages to promote their acquisition of English.
