HIS 648 - History and Philosophy of History

Historiographical survey of theories of selected theoreticians (Vico, Hegel, Marx, Ranke, etc.) on such problems as divinity, humanity, freedom, human understanding, historical understanding. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the historical significance of key themes, events, and people relevant to the history of historical theory.
  2. Assess the persuasiveness of historians' claims about the past.
  3. Identify the implications of historiographical innovations and debates for the history of historical theory.
