MAT 336 - Differential Equations

Introduction to ordinary differential equations, including first and second order equations, systems of equations, Laplace transforms and applications. Prerequisite: A grade of C- or better in MAT 122 or MAT 236. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code S = offered in spring

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Solve separable and linear 1st order initial value problems.
  2. Determine and characterize the equilibria of a 1st order autonomous equations.
  3. Use software to numerically solve and graph solutions to 1st order initial value problems.
  4. Determine solutions to homogeneous and nonhomogeneous 2nd order constant coefficient differential equations, and be able to use them to find solutions to initial value problems.
  5. Write the corresponding initial value problem for suitable application
  6. Use software to plot the direction field of a planar autonomous system and characterize the stability of its critical points.
  7. Use the method of Laplace transform and partial fractions to solve 1st and 2nd order constant coefficient initial value problems.
