SOC 300 - Introduction to Sociological Theory

A broad introduction to social and sociological theory. Examines themes of classical theory, as well as major works of contemporary theory. Prerequisite: SOC 100, SOC 150 or ANT 102. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe major characteristics of premodern society, modern society and postmodern society, and articulate the implications for social solidarity, individualism, and industrialization of each era.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the major classical and contemporary theories of sociology and the assumptions and implications of each.
  3. Apply classical and contemporary sociological theories to a range of social problems.
