PSY 440 - The Psychology of Violence and Victimization Overview of factors associated with violent behavior and the impact of such behavior on survivors of trauma. Focus on commonly used risk assessment instruments as well as the strengths and limitations of current risk assessment strategies. Inquiry into the impact of violence on victims and ways that mental health professionals can promote resiliency in survivors of violence. Examination of theories of violence, the prediction of violent behavior, the effect of domestic and sexual violence on survivors of trauma, and treatment strategies for survivors of violence. Prerequisites: PSY 101 and six additional hours in psychology; recommended PSY 421. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify factors that increase and decrease the risk for criminal behavior.
- Describe the strengths and limitations of current risk assessment strategies.
- Describe the potential impact of trauma on survivors of violence.
- Describe appropriate treatment strategies targeted at promoting resiliency in survivors of traumatic events.
