PSY 280 - Orientation to Clinical Professions in Psychology

An introduction to the field of clinical psychology and the helping professions. Review of professional roles and settings, training requirements and areas of specialization such as neuropsychology, child, forensic. Discussion of contemporary and ethical issues, clinical activities such as assessment, intervention, record keeping and review of basic helping skills. Prerequisite: PSY 101. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Compare the professional roles, activities, and educational and training requirements of the helping professions in psychology. 
  2. Describe the various responsibilities of a mental health professional in psychology
  3. Recognize and differentiate between specific approaches employed by helping professionals, including types of assessment measures, theoretical orientations, etc.
  4. Analyze contemporary and ethical issues related to clinical practice and the importance of multicultural considerations and competence.
  5. Identify basic counseling skills and explain how they facilitate effective counseling.
