MUS 100 - Music in Western Society: A Social Experience

A survey of musical styles and cultures with a focus on ethnicity, gender and spirituality over time, ranging from art music of the medieval period to popular music of today.  Fulfills: GE 8; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Define and demonstrate basic musical concepts such as: beat, meter, harmony, melody, texture, and theme.
  2. Identify universal musical characteristics, compositions, composers and performers from eighteenth century music to twenty-first century music.
  3. Identify musical styles from a variety of time periods and cultures.
  4. Identify common musical genres such as: symphony, opera, jazz, rhythm & blues, popular music.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of varied cultures through musical knowledge and music's relationship to the individual and to the human condition.
