EXS 479 - Social Critique of Sport

Introduction to conducting research on the social world of sport from a historical and qualitative research perspective. Open to juniors and seniors. Prerequisites: EXS 287 and EXS 346; and EXS 420, which may be taken concurrently. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Deconstruct the strengths and weaknesses of published works on sport and their social worlds.
  2. Compose critically and analytically defined work on sport and the social worlds in which they exist.
  3. Analyze research on sport that examines the traditions, rituals, gender practices, social class influences, ethnic diversity and other social mores related to sport groups.
  4. Organize a plan for sport-related research in order to complete a field experience requirement in the sport studies major.
