EXS 445 - Women and Sport

Examination of the current scholarship and debates surrounding issues of women's participation and involvement in sport. Also explores the dynamics of gender and sporting participation. A critical perspective will be used to examine sport as a significant social institution and its relationship to sexism and homophobia. Open only to juniors and seniors. Also listed as WGS 445. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe current scholarship and debates surrounding issues of women's participation and involvement in sport.
  2. Explain the dynamics of gender and sporting participation.
  3. Explore gender and sport and the multiple intersections with various social relations, race, ethnicity, class, ability, and age.
  4. Describe the historical and social context underlying the current state of women's sports participation and experiences.
