EXS 357 - Nutrition and Sport Performance

Examination of how nutrition impacts exercise and athletic performance through relationship among nutrition, physical activity and health promotion. Analysis of current diet trends and the influence of ergogenic aids. Prerequisites: BIO 301, 302. Also listed as HLH 357. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe human energy requirements and metabolism of macronutrients during different types of physical activities, including aerobic and anaerobic exercise.
  2. Analyze commonly used ergogenic aids among athletes and develop in-depth knowledge of their mechanisms in the human body during exercise.
  3. Compare and contrast the relationship between nutrition and athletic performance among different types of athletes.
  4. Describe relative energy deficiency in sport, anemia and other prevalent nutrition-related health problems commonly experienced by athletes.
  5. Demonstrate writing skills through completion of article summaries pertaining to current trends in sports nutrition.
